Housing

A block of rooms at Buckhorn Lake Park is being held for the school until August 22.  Most have two double beds (no refrigerator), but there are two rooms with one queen bed (no refrigerator), and two with one king bed and a mini refrigerator.  In addition, there is one two-bedroom cottage available with four double beds.  Make your room reservations and payments through the KY-WV Baha’i School registration site.  Check in:  after 4 pm, checkout: before 11 am (10 am for the cottage).

Cost:

Room with two double beds:
$96/night plus $11/night for each additional adult beyond two
Room with one queen bed:
$96/night plus $11/night for each additional adult beyond two
Room with one king bed:
$107/night plus $11/night for each additional adult beyond two
Cottage:
$181/night plus $11/night for each additional adult beyond six
There is no wifi in the cottage at this time

Other options

There is no campground at the Park; please consult your own maps and information sources for campgrounds in the region.  For example, Eagle’s Landing Campground is 3.3 miles away, though we have no information to offer on its amenities or whether it will be open at that date.  Contact information: 265 State Hwy 2072, Gays Creek, KY 41745, phone(606) 398-7071.  There are other campgrounds in the area that are farther away.  There are also various hotels in Hazard, KY, but be aware that this is more than 20 miles away.

Food

Some refreshments will be provided, including continental breakfasts.  Meals are available for purchase at the Buckhorm Lake Park’s restaurant, Bowlingtown Country Kitchen—refer to the park’s website for menus and prices.  Note that there are no other restaurants nearby.  Also, the park states that we cannot bring in our own food into the restaurant and meeting areas.

Some Park Information

The park offers a beach and bathhouse by the lake for swimming (water conditions and weather permitting), an outdoor swimming pool, basketball, volleyball, horseshoes, a small playground, hiking, fishing (license required), minigolf (fee), and rental pontoon boats.  The park is also a good place for elk and bird watching.  See the park’s website for more details.

Free wifi is available in the lodge housing and meeting rooms, but not in the cottage.

Directions

Consult your maps with great care before embarking, and be aware that cell reception (or real-time GPS contact) may at times be extremely weak or non-existent.  Also, roads become somewhat narrow and very windy—perhaps not much fun driving on for the first time in the dark.  Coming from the north we suggest taking a route that near the end follows KY-15 S toward Hazard, and then turning right onto KY-28 W roughly 21.2 miles after Jackson.  Stay on KY-28 W for about 10.2 miles and then turn left onto KY-1833.  The park is then about 4.8 miles on the left.  On the other hand, if you are coming from the south on KY-15 N from Hazard you would turn left onto KY-28 W roughly 9 miles after Hazard and then proceed as above.
